The rule
German uses the 26 letters you know, plus ä, ö, ü and ß (scharfes S). When you give your name, people will ask Wie schreibt man das? — How do you spell that? — and you spell it letter by letter.
The letters that trip people up
| e | like “ay” — B, C, D, E, G, P, T |
|---|---|
| i | like “ee” — I |
| j | “yot” |
| v | “fau” |
| w | “vay” |
| y | “üpsilon” |
| ß | “scharfes S” — never starts a word |
German W sounds like an English V, and German V sounds like an English F. „Weber" starts with a V sound.
