Sport in German splits between two verbs and you need both: spielen for anything with a ball or a team (Fußball spielen, Tennis spielen), and machen or gehen for the rest (Sport machen, schwimmen gehen, joggen gehen). Saying „Ich spiele Schwimmen" is the giveaway.
