Separating rubbish is a daily, slightly serious business in Germany, and every building has the bins for it: Papier (blue), Verpackungen (yellow), Bio (brown), Restmüll (black) — and glass sorted by colour, taken to a container, not before 7 a.m. and never on Sundays. The other thing nobody explains: Pfand. Most bottles and cans cost 8-25 cents extra at the till, and you get it back by feeding them into a machine at any shop that sells them. Look for Pfand or Mehrweg on the label.
